Stealth: An Art

Imagine you are in an old stile Japanese home. You are clad in black, perched in the rafters above. Below you is one of the most dangerous men on the planet. His fists are told to be able to shatter even the thickest trees in half. You know what will happen if he finds you. You slip down from your perch on the rafters to the floor, landing silently. You slip over behind an end table in the corner that holds a bonzai tree. You sit there, thinking of what will be next. Can he see you? Probably not, your gi is pitch black and the room is dark. But what if he does find you? You will not be able to fight him. You can try, but then you may become his next tree. He moves, turning toward you. Your heart skips a beat. Your breath quickens. Will you die today? Suddenly, he speaks. "I can hear you breathing." He says.

I have put a rather interesting title to this article today: "Stealth: An Art". If there is anything I have learned in my years of a writer it is that a title is almost important as what it is a title for. Not only is it the first thing that grabs a reader's eye, but it needs to convey the topic of the article without giving away any spoilers. "Stealth: An Art" does exactly that. Today, I will be talking to you about stealth again, and how it is an art.

Nowadays a lot of things can be considered an art: Math, painting, dancing, gastronomy, even video games are debated as an art!!!

The definition of art is the expression of human creative skill or thinking or of emotion.

I think stealth meets all of those requirements. It must be creative. It is never "one size fits all." And, as I have emphasized before, it requires an immense use of brain power, and application of that brain power. And emotion! Don't get me started there! While it is usually rather hard to hide when you are crying or skipping with joy, there is still an large amount of emotion and control thereof in stealth. There is a feeling of survival. Often times if you get caught it won't be good for you. You could be charged with breaking an entering or worse if those that caught you aren't friendly, so don't go snooping about your neighbor's place. But through the immense feeling of survival there is an undertone of fear. To be stealthy, to be a ninja, one most separate that feeling of survival from the fear and gracefully guide it to keep one undiscovered. The fear he must take and hide deep within himself. Even the breathing that is caused by fear can reveal your location. Part of the fun of being stealthy is the fast moving heartbeat, but a ninja must use that to his advantage. He must use every emotion and guide it, control it, master it into such a way that it makes him invisible to the naked eye. Yes, I would definitely call stealth an art.

While there is only so much I can teach you about stealth in my articles, I want to stress this point: be aware. In a world of technology no one is aware of what is happening around them. Be aware. In many articles by the former CIA officer Jason Hanson, he stresses this point as well. You should check out his website at http://spyescapeandevasion.com/.

Even if you have no interest in becoming a ninja or learning to be stealthy, be aware. It not only prevents muggings and murder, but it helps you get more out of life in general.

Stealth Techniques

Probably the biggest and most important part of being a ninja is being as silent as the grave. I know that isn't shown much on the show,...
